EKO HOT BLOG reports that although the bill had passed a third reading in the House of Representatives, it initially faced rejection in the Senate, sparking controversy among lawmakers. It was later reconsidered, passed by the Senate, and sent to the President for assent.

In a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu cited a thorough review and broad consultation as reasons for withholding his assent, stating, “I have decided to withhold my assent to the bill, in accordance with the powers vested in me by the Constitution.”

He expressed appreciation for the Senate’s efforts but hoped the decision would be understood.

The bill, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, aimed to extend the retirement age to safeguard institutional memory in the National Assembly, drawing inspiration from practices in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom.
