Tinubu Govt Announces Plans For Financial Autonomy For Tertiary Institutions

Eko Hot Blog reports that the federal government is considering granting financial autonomy to tertiary institutions in the country as a means of fostering growth in the nation’s education sector.

President Ahmed Tinubu hinted at this during the 27th Convocation ceremony of the University of Abuja in Abuja yesterday.

A statement signed by the head, information and protocol, federal ministry of special duties and intergovernmental affairs, Mrs Anastasia Ogbonna, said the president, who was represented by the minister, Zaphaniah Jisalo, said one of the key strategies proposed in the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration is to grant financial autonomy to tertiary Institutions.

He said it would encourage universities to source funds through grants and corporate sponsorships as well as promote self-sustainability and reduce dependency on the federal government.

“By granting financial autonomy, institutions can effectivel y manage funds to enhance competitiveness, strive for excellence and eradicate education disrupt caused by strikes and let me emphasise that this administration is resolute in its dedication to reform the nation’s education sector,” the president added.

Earlier, the vice chancellor, University of Abuja, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, said 7,034 students were part of the 27th convocation of the institution which covered four years.
