Eko Hot Blog reports that in a sweeping move to transform Nigeria’s education landscape, President Bola Tinubu has greenlighted an extensive nationwide census spanning all schools, teachers, and students from primary to tertiary levels.
The unprecedented data collection exercise is premised on “a paucity of coordinated, verifiable, and authentic data on all aspects of the education sector in Nigeria, which is critical for planning,” according to the Presidency.

Tinubu’s spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale stated that the stocktake aims to “comprehensively overhaul the education sector to improve learning and skill development, increase enrollment, and ensure the academic security of the nation’s children.” It will ascertain the number of schools, their conditions, living facilities, proximity to each other, and educational infrastructure, among other crucial datapoints.
Furthermore, the census will determine the number of teachers countrywide, their qualifications, training support received, as well as tally all pupils and students enrolled, categorized by gender and exam grades.
The approved policies are collectively termed “DOTS” – an acronym representing Data Repository, Out-of-School Children Education, Teacher Training and Development, and Skill Development and Acquisition.
“This new data tracking architecture will enable the government to track the progress of students, thus having a clear data-driven mechanism for interventions, especially concerning out-of-school children, girls, and those with specific learning disabilities, among others,” Ngelale explained.
The information gathered is expected to guide federal and state interventions for teacher training, development, and overall support. It will also shed light on gender ratios, specific learning needs, school dropouts, and facilitate year-by-year monitoring through a dedicated portal accessible to federal, state, and local authorities.

As Nigeria grapples with rising out-of-school children, which UNICEF estimates at 10.2 million for primary and 8.1 million for junior secondary levels, Tinubu’s administration aims to reset the education system through comprehensive data-driven policies under the “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
