Former militant leader Asari Dokubo has declared his intention to form an alliance with the North ahead of the 2027 presidential election, accusing President Bola Tinubu of betrayal after supporting his rise to the presidency in 2023.
In a viral video addressing his followers, Dokubo recounted how he invested his personal funds to campaign for Tinubu during the 2023 election, only to feel let down by the president’s actions since taking office. He urged Nigerians to hold him accountable should Tinubu fail to fulfill his duties as president.
“I apologize to our elders, as they were not mistaken in forging alliances with the North. As young men, we will now pursue the same path,” Dokubo stated. “From today, I will work to establish an alliance with the North.
President Tinubu betrayed me after I depleted my bank account campaigning for him. The Tinubu I see now is not the Tinubu I once knew. We will spread the message that only Northerners can collaborate effectively with the Ijaw people.
“We cannot work with the Yoruba; they have betrayed us. We risked our lives by voting and dedicating ourselves, and this is the outcome?”
This declaration comes amid reports of a potential alliance among opposition political parties in Nigeria. In January, political scientist Pat Utomi revealed that he had consulted with Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso from the NNPP regarding the formation of a new political party.
Recently, Utomi confirmed that Atiku, Kwankwaso, and Obi have agreed to unite in forming a political party aimed at ousting President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.
