At the launch of General Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” President Bola Tinubu commended the former military president for his courage and patriotism in publicly confirming M.K.O. Abiola’s victory in the 1993 presidential election.
Eko Hot Blog reports that this marks the first time in 32 years that Babangida has openly acknowledged Abiola’s win.
President Tinubu, serving as the Special Guest of Honour at the event in Abuja, emphasized the significance of Babangida’s revelation in shedding light on a crucial moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The 1993 election, which was annulled by the military regime, sparked a political crisis that ultimately contributed to Babangida’s departure from power and impacted the nation’s political landscape.

The autobiography launch, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, was attended by a host of dignitaries, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who chaired the event, and former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, who delivered the keynote address.
The gathering also featured former Nigerian leaders such as General Yakubu Gowon, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Dr Goodluck Jonathan, reflecting the event’s significance in Nigeria’s political discourse.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari posthumously honored Abiola with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) award, Nigeria’s highest national honor, and shifted Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12.
Babangida expressed remorse over the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
While acknowledging the decision as deeply regrettable, he emphasized that it was made with the nation’s best interest in mind.
