Tinubu Orders Probe Into Niger Boat Tragedy, Sends Condolences

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the families affected by the recent boat accident in Niger State, where over 150 passengers are reported missing.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that  the tragic incident occurred in the Mokwa Local Government Area on Tuesday when a boat carrying more than 300 people, mostly women and children, capsized while traveling to celebrate Maulid.

The passengers were en route from Mundi Community to Gbajibo Community for the festival.

In a statement released on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu extended his sympathies to the victims’ families and prayed for the repose of the deceased.

The President also directed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to investigate the rising number of boat accidents in Niger State and across the country, calling for immediate measures to curb the trend.

The statement read: “President Bola Tinubu has sent condolences to the Government and people of Niger State following a boat accident on Tuesday night in Mokwa Local Government Area.

The boat, carrying about 300 people, primarily women and children, capsized on the Gbajibo River while traveling from the Mundi community. So far, 150 passengers have been rescued, and 25 bodies recovered.”

The President urged NIWA to expand its surveillance of inland waterways to enhance safety and enforce the ban on night sailing, ensuring that violators are prosecuted.
