Former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju-Kennedy Ohanenye, revealed on Wednesday that she was dismissed less than two weeks after Nigerians donated over ₦200 million to support projects she initiated in the ministry.

EKO HOT BLOG gathered that Ohanenye explained that the projects she planned, including mobile courts and rescue initiatives for young street hawkers, were not covered by the ministry’s current budget. She appealed to the public to fund these efforts, leading to a surprising outpouring of support.

During an interview with Channels Television, the former minister recounted how people gathered at the Aso Rock Villa and contributed the funds. However, she was sacked shortly after, before the money could be utilized.

“When I called on Nigerians, I was so surprised a lot of them gathered at the villa and donated money to this effect. They were very happy to support it. Unfortunately, not up to two weeks after the donations, I was sacked. When that happened, there was no way I could use that money. I asked the secretary in charge to write to the bank to do a reversal of the funds,” she explained.

Ohanenye added that she has no regrets about the decisions she made during her tenure.

Naija News recalls that Ohanenye was among five ministers dismissed by President Bola Tinubu in October 2023 during a cabinet reshuffle. The other sacked ministers included Lola Ade-John (Tourism), Jamila Bio Ibrahim (Youth Development), Tahir Mamman (Education), and Abdullahi Muhammad Gwarzo (Housing and Urban Development).
