Tinubu’s Actions Behind Pushback Against Tax Reform Bills – Sowunmi

Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticised President Bola Tinubu for the strong opposition to the tax reform bills introduced by his administration.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the new tax bills have sparked widespread controversy, with significant pushback from Nigerians, including the 36 state governors under the National Economic Council (NEC). Some northern governors have also openly rejected certain provisions of the bills.

During an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Sowunmi attributed the resistance to Tinubu’s appointment of his tribesmen to key economic and tax positions, including finance minister, revenue chairman, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, and tax reform chair.

While acknowledging that the tax bills themselves may have merit, Sowunmi argued that the lack of regional representation in these appointments created distrust and apprehension in other parts of the country. He contended that this exclusion made regions feel sidelined and anxious about the new policies.

“The tax bills might be good, but the President has created distrust by appointing people from his own tribe to key economic positions,” Sowunmi said. “The people from other regions will be nervous when they see a new tax regime introduced by a government that doesn’t represent them.”

Sowunmi further explained that the pushback in the National Assembly and Senate stems from the need for representatives to protect the interests of their people. He emphasized that people need to see their own regions reflected in decision-making processes to feel assured that the policies are beneficial to all.

“Nobody will sit at the table and allow harm to come to their tribe,” Sowunmi remarked. “The President needs to communicate clearly, assuring everyone that he will act in the country’s best interest, regardless of regional interests, and that any threats of election repercussions won’t influence his decisions.”
