Officials at the Code of Conduct Bureau are panicked and perplexed after records relating to Bola Tinubu’s asset declaration mysteriously vanished from the storage facility where they had been stored for years.
The absence could jeopardize the EFCC’s ongoing corruption investigation into Mr. Tinubu’s assets, which seems to have overlooked the embattled politician’s political links to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Bureau began searching for Mr. Tinubu’s asset filings after the EFCC demanded copies as part of an ongoing inquiry into the former Lagos Governor’s financial and material possessions, according to three officials familiar with the situation.
As gathered by EKO HOT BLOG , Several offices at the Bureau have been rummaged as officials hurried to deliver the records for the EFCC’s use — but to no avail.
“We have looked everywhere for the case file because we want to comply with the EFCC’s lawful request,” a top bureau management official stated .
“Neither the main head office nor the annex office in Asokoro has been able to locate the documents.”
Another Official who spoke with one of the mid-level Staffers charged with locating the records said that the situation had become “terribly humiliating” and a source of unending concern at the bureau, which is in charge of gathering and keeping properties of scheduled government officials before and after they take office.
From 1999 to 2007, Mr. Tinubu served as the Governor of Lagos. Officials said he declared his assets when he took office and again in May 2007, when he finished his second term.
In 2011, anti-graft agencies investigated and charged Mr. Tinubu based on the documents, but the Code of Conduct Tribunal, which mainly handles cases brought by the Bureau, dismissed the complaint on legal grounds, leaving the case’s merits unresolved for nearly a decade.
Since then, no new charges against the ruling party’s leader have been brought forward.
