The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has elected Chief Tony Okocha as its new chairman.

Okocha, who previously served as the party’s Caretaker Committee Chairman, was elected unopposed during the state delegate congress held on Saturday in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State.

The election, conducted via voice vote, was overseen by Dr. Adoye Omalez, who represented APC’s national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje. Following the congress, Chief Victor Giadom, the APC National Vice Chairman for the South-South, commended the delegates for their peaceful conduct, emphasizing that the congress reflected the unity and strength of the APC in Rivers State. He urged members to support the newly elected executive in advancing the party’s goals.

In his inaugural address, Okocha set an ambitious target for the APC, vowing to wrest control of the state government by 2027. He also sought to dispel the notion that the party lacked unity, pointing to the peaceful election process as evidence of the APC’s strength.

He praised President Bola Tinubu for his achievements, particularly the reopening of the Port Harcourt Refinery, and reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to winning future elections in the state. “Our members came out on their own volition, showing their love for the APC. We are on the right path, and we will conduct and win elections,” Okocha declared.

Okocha highlighted the party’s aim to secure victories across all levels of government in Rivers State, from the Assembly to the governorship, as well as in the 2027 presidential election. He stressed that the APC would continue to support President Tinubu and push for improvements in Nigeria’s oil sector, with the Port Harcourt Refinery as a key example of the administration’s progress.

“We are determined to ensure APC takes the reins of governance in Rivers State by 2027,” Okocha affirmed. He also thanked the party delegates, national representatives, and INEC for their role in the successful conduct of the congress.

In addition to Okocha, other key positions were filled during the congress, including the Deputy Chairman, State Secretary, Publicity Secretary, State Auditor, State Women Leader, Youth Leader, Legal Advisor, and Zonal Leaders from the three senatorial districts of the state.
