EDITOR’S PICK:
After eating meat or strong foods, most people use toothpicks to remove those annoying bits that get stuck between the teeth. Although most people see this practice as the right thing to do, it is one of the major mistakes that can damage your oral health.
1. They can cause infections in the mouth
Toothpicks have the potential of causing infection because they are not sterile and most people leave them open for dirt and dust to accumulate.
Introducing such unsterile material into your mouth can inoculate bacteria and cause infections.
In addition, the pointed end of the toothpick can also puncture your gums, leaving them vulnerable to bacteria and much bigger dental problems.
2. It can widen the spaces between your teeth
When you use toothpicks regularly, it widens the gap between your teeth and can also damage dental work. Over time, this can lead to tooth removal. As a result of this mistake, we have many people in their 30s and 40s whose teeth are no longer complete.
What to use instead of toothpicks:
Instead of using toothpicks that can cause damage to your teeth, you can use any of the following:
1. Floss
Dental floss is ideal for removing debris and bits of meat that gets stuck in between the teeth. So, next time you visit the restaurant, ask for floss instead of toothpicks.
