Tottenham Vs Chelsea: Why We Lost Carabao Cup Semi Final Match – Conte

  • Tottenham Vs Chelsea: Why We Lost Carabao Cup Semi Final Match – Conte

EKO HOT BLOG Tottenham manager, Antonio Conte, says his side “struggled a bit in the first half” of the 0-1 loss to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi final second leg on Wednesday night.

Chelsea triumphed 3-0 on aggregate and booked their place in the final of the EFL Cup after a commanding performance in the capital. The Blues took the lead through Antonio Rudiger inside the first half, with Pierluigi Gollini’s error allowing him to head home from a Mason Mount corner. Spurs did win a penalty before the first 45 minutes came to an end, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) officials decided Andre Marriner’s original decision was wrong after he ruled Rudiger had fouled Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in the box. He awarded a second penalty in the second half, but the officials sided with Chelsea for a second time after Kepa Arrizabalaga brought down Lucas Moura in the box by winning the ball. Spurs’ bad luck continued as Harry Kane’s goal was ruled out for offside, and their wait for a trophy goes on.

“I think the performance was much better than the performance in the first leg. The first half we struggled a bit, especially the way to try to bring pressure without the ball,” Conte said after the match.

“In the second half the performance was good, the intensity was high. I think we deserved a better final result today. But I think after two games Chelsea deserved to reach the final in this competition.”

On the difference in squads and benches, the Italian tactician said: “I don’t think we can compare the Tottenham and Chelsea situations right now. It’s not fair to compare. It’s impossible to compare.”
