  • State to use domestic tourism and hospitality as a tool to eradicate local poverty.
  • Second and third phase to cover Ikorodu, Ikeja and Badagry divisions.

Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture have begun a familiarisation tour to the five divisions of the State.

The tour is geared towards a deep and better understanding of various communities and the formulation of strategies that will strengthen the advancement of tourism prospects these divisions are imbued with.

Ekohotblog gathered that the First Phase of the familiarisation tour, which commenced in Epe and Lagos Island areas of the State, would be expanded to Ikorodu, Ikeja and Badagry divisions in the second and third Phases respectively.

Senior Special Assistant, SSA, to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr Tunji Seymour, who led the officials, said that the Ministry will focus on the development of domestic tourism, as well as create a database of the various tourism sites in Lagos State, for the necessary strategy to promote tourism.

The State Government, according to him, intends to use domestic tourism and hospitality as a tool to eradicate local poverty, thereby attracting both Local and international tourists for the growth of several other sites in diverse areas in the State.

Besides, he noted that the initiative would, in turn, create employment and increase economic growth, which would usher in an upgrade of infrastructure in the concerned communities and also the provision of non-wage tourism benefits amongst other benefits.

Seymour restated the resolution of Governor Sanwo-Olu-led-administration to give a sense of belonging to all communities in the State by giving viability to the various tourism sites peculiar to each locality.

The SSA and officials of the Research and Development Arm of the Ministry were l received during the visitation by the traditional rulers of the various communities visited. These include the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oba Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo; the Olu of Epe, His Royal Majesty Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale; and the Elegushi of Ikate land, His Royal Majesty, Oba Saheed Elegushi.

Some of the tourism sites visited are the Old Alara’s Palace founded in the 14th Century, the Igunnuko Shrine in Epe, the location of the Canon Guns used by the colonial masters and the Elegushi Beach among others.
