Eko Hot Blog reports that renowned Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham shared on Tuesday the emotional toll piracy has taken on her, revealing instances of panic attacks and hospitalization.

This disclosure coincided with the police’s announcement of the arrest of five suspects linked to the piracy of Abraham’s movie, ‘Malaika,’ which incurred a production cost of N500 million.

Abraham, who has actively taken a stand against piracy, commended the police, particularly AIG IG Idowu Owohunwa, for translating their commitment into action by apprehending the suspects.

She expressed her dedication to the fight against piracy and safeguarding intellectual property in the film industry.

The Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos, reported the arrest of five suspects, including two women, associated with the alleged piracy of ‘Malaika.’

Charges include conspiracy, infringement on intellectual property, piracy, and cyber-related crimes related to the illicit use of cyberspace for movie broadcasting.

ASP Aminat Mayegun, the FCID spokesperson, paraded the suspects before newsmen at the FCID, Alagbon, Lagos, providing details of their alleged involvement in piracy activities.

The criminal complaint was lodged by Toyin Abraham and Seun Olayemi, co-producers of ‘Malaika,’ on Thursday.

The complainants accused elements of criminally pirating their recent movie, originally released for cinema viewing on December 21, 2023.

They alleged the unlawful access, uploading on a website, and creation of a streaming web link for global viewership.

Mayegun outlined the joint investigation involving the Special Investigation Units of the Anti-Fraud and Cybercrime Sections of the Department, deploying intelligence and cybercrime assets.

The AIG in charge of FCID Alagbon, Idowu Owohunwa, affirmed his commitment to collaborating with the movie industry and the Nigerian Copyright Commission to eliminate criminal elements from the space.
