Traffic Congestion: OYRTMA Launches Crackdown on Illegal Street Trading

The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) initiated a series of raids over the weekend, targeting illegal street traders within the Ibadan metropolis.

Led by OYRTMA Chairman Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd) and General Manager Commander Ayoade Adekola, the operation focused on the Oritamerin, Gege, Agbeni, and Ogunpa areas of the state.

Adesagba explained that the crackdown aims to address the issues of blocked roads and slow traffic regulation caused by the conversion of these areas into makeshift markets.

The proliferation of illegal street trading has led to severe traffic congestion and environmental pollution, negatively impacting the quality of life for residents and commuters.

He highlighted the environmental consequences of these activities. According to Adesagba, the makeshift markets contribute to indiscriminate waste disposal, clogging drainage systems and exacerbating flooding in parts of the city.

Expressing disappointment in the marketers’ failure to adhere to government regulations, Adesagba oversaw the seizure of market stalls and the imposition of fines on those found flouting the rules. Additionally, 12 individuals operating an illegal motor park within the market were apprehended and fined.

The Chairman emphasized the importance of compliance with government regulations and warned marketers against selling their goods on the roads. By doing so, they pose risks to their own safety and the safety of others while also contributing to environmental degradation.

“The OYRTMA’s enforcement operation is part of the Oyo State Government’s broader efforts to reduce accidents and improve road safety”, he said.

“This government’s initiatives have led to a significant reduction in accidents, making the roads safer for marketers and road users alike”, he added.

According to him, OYRTMA’s actions have been commended for promoting a conducive environment for business and transportation in Oyo state.
