The plane made an emergency diversion to Graz, Austria, following engine issues that caused smoke to spread throughout the aircraft. The flight attendant, whose identity has not been disclosed, was airlifted to a hospital in Graz and placed in intensive care. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday, a week after the incident.

Swiss International Air Lines CEO Jens Fehlinger expressed profound sorrow over the loss.

“We are devastated at our dear colleague’s death,” he said. Chief Operating Officer Oliver Buchhofer vowed to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. “We have many questions, and we want them answered,” Buchhofer stated.

The emergency resulted in the evacuation of all 74 passengers and five crew members. Twelve passengers and all crew members required medical attention. Swiss International Air Lines has since launched an extensive investigation in collaboration with authorities, the engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, and aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

Preliminary findings suggest a technical issue in one of the engines, though the exact cause of the smoke remains under investigation. The airline emphasized that its teams are working tirelessly to evaluate the facts and findings.

Protective breathing equipment used by the cabin crew is also under scrutiny as part of the investigation.
