In a statement on Sunday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident.

Hundeyin noted that the case was reported to the Lion Building Division of the command by another member of staff of the EKEDC from the Lagos Island at about 5.55 p.m. on Saturday, May 20.

The police spokesperson revealed that the EKEDC worker reported that on Saturday, one of his colleagues simply identified as Umaru, aged 51, got electrocuted while digging to locate a faulty transformer cable at the P&T Obalende area.

He added that another colleague who tried to rescue the electrocuted official also got electrocuted.

“In the process, another colleague named Sunday Awaruwa, 48 years old, who tried to rescue the victim was also electrocuted,” Hundeyin said.

“Based on the report, detectives visited and photographed the scene, rescued the victims, and rushed them to the Lagos Island General Hospital, where they were confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

“Their remains were deposited at the IDH Morgue, Yaba for autopsy. Meanwhile, investigation is in progress.”

The latest tragedy comes barely two months after another EKEDC official, Balogun Yusuf, was electrocuted on duty.

As of April 27, 2023, Yusuf’s family members were petitioning the DisCo for a N250 million compensation.

It was stated in the petition that Yusuf fell down from a pole while he attempted to restore power supply to some households on Ladipo Labinjo Street, off Coker Road, in the Surulere area of Lagos State. From the fall, he suffered multiple injuries to his head, face, legs and arms.

The petition also read that the four junior EKEDC staffers who accompanied Yusuf on the assignment fled from the scene with his clothes, leaving his lifeless body on the ground.
