According to an assessment notification, the actress owed N7,376,000.00 in taxes for the year 2022, with an additional outstanding liability of N11,264,092 from the income year 2021.
In response to the tax assessment, Iyabo Ojo took to her Instagram page, expressing her dissatisfaction with the government’s demand for such an exorbitant amount. She mentioned that she had previously filed a complaint regarding the tax issue but claimed that no action had been taken.
In her Instagram post, which has since been deleted, the actress boldly declared that she would not make any payment and dared Governor Sanwo-Olu to arrest, jail, or even kill her, emphasizing that she was unafraid of death. However, some netizens seized the opportunity to mock and taunt her, reminding her of her previous support for the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
In a subsequent Instagram post, Iyabo Ojo defended herself against critics and asserted that she would not succumb to any form of tribal bigotry. She reiterated her unwavering support for Peter Obi, emphasizing her desire for a better Nigeria and her determination to speak out fearlessly. The actress maintained that her beliefs would only change if, after eight years, Nigeria displayed a renewed sense of hope.
She wrote,
“I stand and re-stan obediently on my beliefs… I can never be pressured nor shaken… I will never bow down to tribal bigots… I want a better Nigeria, I don’t care whose ego gets bruised… we cannot all believe in the same thing.”
Iyabo Ojo went on to express her empathy for her country and her refusal to prioritize personal gain over national development. She further emphasized her right to voice her opinions and stated that she viewed all Nigerians as fellow citizens, regardless of their differing perspectives.
Concluding her post, she asserted, “If you didn’t make me, you can’t break me. You can take the body but never my soul.”
The ongoing clash between Iyabo Ojo and Governor Sanwo-Olu, coupled with the actress’s unwavering stance against perceived tribal bigotry, has ignited intense discussions among netizens and added fuel to the existing conversations surrounding Nigeria’s social and political landscape.
