As part of its conscious effort to end insurgency and tackle insecurity in the country, The defence headquarters says troops have unleashed heavy casualties on Boko Haram insurgents and bandits terrorising the country.
Giving the lowdown of the military triumph, DHQ said 188 members of the Boko Haram and Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) terror groups and 411 bandits were killed by troops in May.
The Coordinator Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, made this known in a statement.
Enenche said 236 victims, including women and children, were freed from the terrorists’ captivity within the period under review.
The terrorists and other criminal elements were killed in various operations conducted by the Armed Forces of Nigeria across the country.
He disclosed that suicide bombers were among the insurgents neutralised by the troops.
Also, troops of 151 Battalion captured one Cobra armoured personnel carrier, one Dushka anti-aircraft gun, one AK-47 rifle and one FN rifle from terrorists at Banki Junction and Firgi in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
Other items recovered by the troops include three hand grenades, two AK-47 rifle magazines, one FN rifle magazine, 78 rounds of 12.7mm anti-aircraft ammunition, 25 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and 25 rounds of fabricated 7.62mm ammunition.
