The 30-year-old center-back from PAOK Thessaloniki, William Troost-Ekong, showcased his generous act on Brila FM on Monday.
Born in The Netherlands to a Dutch mother and a Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong remains closely connected to his Ibibio roots, reflecting his commitment to giving back to the community that shaped his father’s upbringing.
Seen as a proud ambassador, Troost-Ekong’s stellar performances for the Eagles have earned him admiration from every Akwa Ibom native.
Troost-Ekong’s leadership shone brightly as he captained the Eagles during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Leading by example, he emerged as the team’s top scorer with three goals and was rightfully crowned MVP of the tournament.
Despite Nigeria’s loss in the final to the hosts, Troost-Ekong’s outstanding performance left an indelible mark.
Troost-Ekong was honoured by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, following his stellar AFCON outing.
The player presented an Eagles jersey to the Governor during a reception at the Government House in Uyo as a token of appreciation for the state’s unwavering support and encouragement.
Born in The Netherlands to a Dutch mother, Troost-Ekong had the option to represent either the Dutch or Nigerian national teams. Despite initially featuring for the Dutch at the U-19 and U-20 levels, he later opted to pledge his allegiance to Nigeria. He earned six caps at the U-23 level before ascending to the Eagles.

He made his debut for Nigeria’s senior team on June 13, 2015, in an AFCON qualifying match against Chad, playing the full 90 minutes. Since then, he has accumulated 71 caps and scored seven goals for the national team.
