A devastating incident on Sunday resulted in the deaths of two dispatch riders when a 20-feet container fell on them during a collision between two fully loaded Mack trucks on Eko Bridge inward Alaka.

According to Taofiq, the dispatch riders, whose vehicle registration numbers were T-10357 LA and KJA 107 XM, were traveling on the bridge when the unfortunate event occurred. LASTMA stated that the primary cause of the accident was excessive speeding.
“Preliminary findings suggest that the driver of one of the articulated trucks, reportedly driving at an excessive speed while allegedly dozing off, lost control of the vehicle.
“The truck then careened into another moving trucks ahead of it, triggering a violent impact.
“This collision led to the dislodgement of a 20-foot container from one of the trucks, which subsequently crushed two unsuspecting dispatch riders who were navigating the route at the time.
“Both victims were confirmed dead at the scene,” he said.
Taofeeq noted that the swift intervention of LASTMA officers stationed under the Eko Bridge enabled the rescue of a severely injured truck driver.
The driver was promptly transported to a nearby hospital in a government ambulance for immediate medical attention.
However, Taofiq noted that two truck drivers involved in the incident fled the scene, likely fearing legal repercussions. Investigations are currently underway to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible.
To ensure the safety of motorists and prevent additional accidents, the affected area has been cordoned off, with traffic redirected through Coastain Roundabout.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and underscored the importance of responsible driving practices.
