Trump Appoints Mark Burnett Special Envoy To UK
US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Mark Burnett, the British TV executive who produced The Apprentice, as his special envoy to the UK.
Trump expressed his “great honour” in selecting Burnett for the position, which is distinct from the US ambassador role. The president-elect stated that Burnett would focus on enhancing diplomatic ties, particularly in areas such as trade, investment opportunities, and cultural exchanges.

In a statement, Burnett said, “I am truly honoured to serve The United States of America and President Trump as his Special Envoy to the United Kingdom.”
Burnett, known for creating The Apprentice and producing numerous other reality TV shows, has won 13 Emmy Awards. Trump praised Burnett’s exceptional career in television and business, noting that his diplomatic experience and international recognition make him uniquely qualified for the role.
In addition to his appointment of Burnett, Trump has selected billionaire donor Warren Stephens as his ambassador to the UK, though Stephens’ nomination must be confirmed by the US Senate. Burnett’s position, however, does not require Senate approval.
A native of Essex, Burnett, 64, served as a paratrooper in the British Army before moving to the US in 1982. He later became a prominent figure in reality television, creating shows such as Survivor and Shark Tank (the US version of Dragon’s Den). Burnett played a key role in boosting Trump’s fame when the businessman starred in The Apprentice from 2008 to 2015.
Burnett also served as president of MGM Television until 2022 when Amazon acquired the studio. He was involved in planning Trump’s first inauguration in 2017.

While Burnett was once critical of Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, he has since worked closely with the president-elect. He had previously distanced himself from Trump’s controversial comments from the Access Hollywood tapes, denouncing the hatred and division associated with Trump’s campaign at the time.
Burnett’s wife, Roma Downey, is an actress, and together they have publicly opposed the misogyny and divisiveness they believed were part of Trump’s public persona.
