Trump Escapes Impeachment As Senate Dismiss Charges Against Him
The US Senate on Wednesday acquitted President Donald Trump of impeachment charges brought against him by the House of Representatives.
Ekohotblog recalls that the Nancy Pelosi-led House of Reps had impeached Trump in December 2019 for Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Congress.
But the Republican-controlled Senate voted to acquit the US president of any wrongdoing.
Senator Mitt Romney was the only Republican that voted to convict the president for Abuse of Power – 52-48.
On obstruction of charges statement, the voted was 53-47, with Romney voting to acquit Trump.
Recall that Republicans in the Senate had last Friday voted down a motion to compel witnesses and subpoena documents.
It was gathered that the Republican-dominated Senate was expected to back and acquit the president.
Trump has repeatedly described his impeachment as a “witch hunt” and “hoax”.
He remains the third president in the history of the United States to be impeached by the House of Representatives.
