The Trump administration classified Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” for severe violations of religious freedom, citing the government’s failure to protect Christians from ongoing violence.

He emphasized that governments that allow such violence to happen without consequences pose a national security threat. The U.S. State Department, at the direction of the White House, worked to find ways to address the escalating attacks by Islamic State-linked groups and other extremists.
Human rights organizations and U.S. lawmakers supported this stance, pointing to data that showed Nigeria had become one of the deadliest places in the world for Christians.
They criticized the lack of action by Nigerian authorities and called for the government to be held accountable.
