US: Trump Plans Mass Deportations Of Undocumented Immigrants

United States President-elect Donald Trump has outlined plans to deport all undocumented immigrants living in the country over the course of his upcoming four-year term.

In a Sunday interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump revealed his strategy for a broad crackdown on illegal immigration, which he intends to declare a national emergency upon his inauguration on January 20.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that as of January 2022, the Department of Homeland Security estimated that more than 11 million people were residing in the U.S. without legal status, a number that is likely to have increased since then, according to Reuters.

Trump emphasized the necessity of deporting all unauthorized immigrants, stating, “I think you have to do it. It’s a very tough thing to do. You know, you have rules, regulations, laws.”

While focusing on immigration enforcement, Trump also expressed a willingness to negotiate protections for “Dreamers”—immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children without legal status.

During his first term, Trump attempted to dismantle the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which offers deportation relief to Dreamers, but his efforts were blocked by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Additionally, Trump has pledged to issue an executive order to end birthright citizenship on his first day in office.

This policy, which grants citizenship to anyone born in the U.S. regardless of their parents’ immigration status, is grounded in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, supported by a 1898 Supreme Court ruling.

Trump acknowledged the potential for legal challenges to this proposal and suggested that it might require a constitutional amendment to achieve.

The implementation of these measures would require substantial financial resources. According to the American Immigration Council, the cost of deporting all unauthorized immigrants would be about $88 billion annually.

Trump’s team, including incoming border czar Tom Homan, has urged Congress to approve significant funding increases to support the enforcement of immigration laws.
