Trump Picks Elon Musk, Ramaswamy To Lead New ‘Department Of Government Efficiency’

President-elect Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will head a newly created “Department of Government Efficiency” in his second term.

Trump praised the two men, stating, “Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies.”

The announcement, particularly Musk’s involvement, raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest, given Musk’s leadership of companies with lucrative government contracts. It remains unclear how the department, which Trump described as providing “advice and guidance from outside of government,” will function or whether a Republican-controlled Congress would support such a sweeping overhaul of government operations and spending.

The idea for the department was initially proposed by Trump as part of his economic plans in early September, with Musk agreeing to lead the commission should Trump win re-election. Trump’s statement quoted Musk, who said, “This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people!”

Ramaswamy, who campaigned for president before endorsing Trump in January, also took to social media, repeating his campaign slogan: “SHUT IT DOWN,” referring to his call for eliminating federal agencies.

On the campaign trail, Trump emphasized the efficiency commission as a key part of reducing government waste, promising an action plan within six months to eliminate fraud and improper payments, potentially saving trillions of dollars.

Ramaswamy, a vocal advocate for reducing government spending, had called for the elimination of several federal agencies, including the FBI, the Department of Education, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which would result in massive layoffs.

Musk, who has long criticized government regulations, has floated ideas for major reductions in government oversight. He proposed an assessment system that could lead to layoffs of wasteful employees, with generous severance packages for those let go. Musk had suggested the creation of a government efficiency commission and offered to lead it during an August conversation with Trump on X (formerly Twitter), to which Trump responded, “I’d love it.”

Musk also teased the idea of posting the department’s actions online for transparency, even joking about creating “a leaderboard for most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars.”

Trump’s statement concluded with a promise to complete the department’s work by July 4, 2026, stating, “A smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence.”
