Trump Picks Pam Bondi As Attorney General After Gaetz Withdrawal
President-elect Donald Trump has selected long-time ally and veteran prosecutor Pam Bondi as his nominee for attorney general, following Matt Gaetz’s decision to withdraw from consideration earlier in the day.
Bondi, who previously served as Florida’s attorney general, has extensive experience in law enforcement. A staunch Trump supporter, she was a member of his legal team during his first Senate impeachment trial and made headlines for attending his hush money trial in New York to show solidarity.

“Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida Families,” Trump wrote in a social media post announcing his choice.
If confirmed by the Senate, Bondi will oversee the Department of Justice, managing its 115,000 employees and approximately $45 billion budget.
Trump underscored his intent to reshape the department, stating, “For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans—Not anymore.” He added that Bondi would refocus the DOJ on “fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again,” with priorities including border security, dismantling criminal organizations, and restoring public trust in the justice system.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham praised Bondi’s nomination, calling it a “grand slam, touchdown, hole in one, ace, hat trick, slam dunk, Olympic gold medal pick.” He expressed confidence in her swift confirmation.
Bondi’s nomination comes after a tumultuous week for Matt Gaetz, who withdrew amid controversy over a congressional report detailing allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use. Gaetz denied the allegations but stated that the focus on his potential nomination had become a “needless distraction” for Trump’s incoming administration.

Following the announcement, Gaetz congratulated Bondi, calling her a “stellar selection” and commending her legal and leadership skills.
Trump continues to fill his cabinet with loyal allies, underscoring his intention to advance his agenda with a close-knit team as he prepares to take office.
