Trump Taps Fox News Host Pete Hegseth As Defence Secretary

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has selected Fox News host, author, and military veteran Pete Hegseth as his choice for defence secretary.

Hegseth, 44, who served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, would oversee the world’s largest military in what would be his first role in government.

Announcing the nomination on Tuesday, Trump described Hegseth as “tough, smart, and a true believer in America First.” The same day, Trump named another newcomer, billionaire Elon Musk, to a government role focused on cost-cutting.

Following Trump’s recent presidential victory, his administration is beginning to take shape. Hegseth’s nomination was part of a series of national security appointments, including Trump’s choice of John Ratcliffe to lead the CIA.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Hegseth will confront key issues, such as military aid to Israel amid its campaign in Gaza and support for Ukraine against Russian aggression. Trump has signaled a preference to limit U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts and criticized the Biden administration’s financial support for Kyiv during the campaign.

Also on Tuesday, Trump confirmed his selection of South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as homeland security secretary. Additionally, he tapped Michael Waltz, a fellow military veteran, as his national security adviser, to counsel him on foreign threats.

According to sources from CBS News, Senator Marco Rubio—who shares Waltz’s firm stance on China—is expected to become Trump’s secretary of state, though this pick remains unconfirmed.

Following recent midterm results, Republicans have reclaimed control of the Senate and are nearing a majority in the House. Senate approval will be required for some nominations, including Hegseth’s, though Trump has pushed for the next Senate leader to allow him to bypass this process.

On Wednesday, Senate Republicans are set to elect their new leader, the same day Trump is scheduled to meet outgoing President Joe Biden at the White House, marking the start of the traditional transfer of power.
