Trump Threatens to Abandon Ukraine Peace Talks Amid Slow Progress

US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may step back from facilitating peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine if a breakthrough is not achieved soon. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump expressed frustration over the slow pace of talks, declaring the US would “take a pass” if either side made a resolution too difficult.

The warning followed remarks from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stated that the US would not continue pursuing negotiations “for weeks and months on end” without concrete results, emphasizing that Washington had “other priorities.”

These developments come as Russian airstrikes killed two people and injured over 100 in Ukraine’s northeastern cities of Kharkiv and Sumy, highlighting the ongoing intensity of the war.

Trump’s administration initially expressed confidence in securing a swift truce, but efforts have faltered. Tensions resurfaced during a failed February meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which reportedly ended in a shouting match.

Despite this, the US and Ukraine signed a memorandum of intent on Thursday to establish an investment fund aimed at rebuilding Ukraine’s economy, potentially as part of a broader peace framework. The deal, which may extend beyond minerals to include energy infrastructure, is expected to be finalized by April 26.

While Trump sees the agreement as a step toward post-war recovery, critics in Ukraine remain cautious. Parliamentarian Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze stressed that Ukraine’s legislature would have the final say on any deal and urged that national interests be safeguarded.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance, speaking from Rome, remained optimistic about ending the conflict. Discussions continue among key stakeholders, but the clock is ticking as US patience runs thin and the war’s toll mounts.
