Trump’s Tariffs on Algerian Fertiliser Help Dangote Exports to U.S.

- Algerian fertiliser now faces a 30% U.S. tariff, compared to 14% for Nigerian imports, boosting Dangote’s competitiveness.
- Dangote Fertiliser exports 37% of its annual 3 million tonnes to the U.S., with expectations of increased market share.
- Group projects revenue growth from $25 billion in 2025 to over $30 billion in 2026, driven by fertiliser and petroleum gains.
Aliko Dangote, the Chairman of Dangote Group, says his company could benefit from new U.S. trade policies introduced by President Donald Trump. The U.S. has placed a 30% tariff (import tax) on fertiliser from Algeria, which competes with Nigeria in selling urea to the U.S.
Speaking at an investment event in Lagos about Dangote Fertiliser, Dangote explained that although a 14% tariff was also placed on Nigerian goods, his team became hopeful when they saw Algeria faced even higher tariffs.

“We were worried about the 14% tariff,” Dangote said. “But when we checked our main competitor—Algeria—they were hit with 30%. That gives us some relief.”

The U.S. had earlier paused these tariffs for 90 days, but the changes still raised concerns among Nigerian exporters, especially since Nigeria is also the biggest oil seller to the U.S. in Africa.
Dangote Fertiliser, which began full operations in 2022, now sells 37% of its 3 million tonnes of urea each year to the U.S. With Algeria facing tougher trade rules, Nigeria might be able to sell even more.

Dangote also said his group expects its earnings to grow from $25 billion in 2025 to over $30 billion in 2026, helped by strong sales in fertiliser and oil products.
