The Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Benue State, Gideon Akaa, clarified on Friday that discussions are still ongoing regarding a new minimum wage, countering rumors of a proposed N40,000 wage circulating on social media.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a phone conversation with journalists, Akaa dismissed the reports, stating that the Benue State government has not presented any specific amount as the new minimum wage.

He emphasized that no agreement has been reached and that the figures currently under negotiation are between N75,000 and N77,000, as proposed by the labor representatives.

“I am not aware of any N40,000 proposal,” Akaa stated. “We had a meeting with the government, and negotiations are still in progress.

“To the best of my knowledge, no one has mentioned a figure like N40,000. The government has yet to commit to any specific amount.”

Akaa urged the public to disregard the rumors, noting that a final decision will only be made once both parties reach an agreement and sign a formal document.

“There are many figures on the negotiation table, including N75,000 and N77,000, but no final figure has been settled upon,” he added.

The ongoing negotiation comes amid a nationwide push for higher minimum wages, with recent approvals in other states, such as N85,000 in Rivers State and N77,000 in Ogun State, raising expectations for similar actions in Benue.
