He made the case on Friday at the inauguration of the NIMR’s cutting-edge Human Virology and Genomics facility in Lagos State.
The new facility underscores NIMR’s dedication to enhancing Nigeria’s capabilities in public health research, disease detection, and researcher training.
Since its inception, NIMR has committed its resources to improving the country’s ability to tackle public health challenges.
The newly commissioned facility, internationally accredited with ISO 15189, boasts multiple laboratories specializing in immunology, histology, molecular research, sample and sequencing preparation, and more.
Dr. Alausa expressed confidence that this facility would elevate NIMR to a leading position in genomics and precision medicine within Nigeria.
“I’m confident that this facility will propel NIMR to become a powerhouse for genomics and precision medicine in Nigeria, cater to cutting-edge research for endemic public health diseases and, in turn, shape the country into a hub for medical research, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR’s vision,” the minister stated.
During the ceremony, Dr. Alausa also highlighted NIMR’s innovations, including the locally made, cost-efficient, and highly effective hepatitis B (HBV) qPCR test kit.
The introduction of this test kit is poised to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality rates associated with HBV once it becomes available in the market.
“Mr. President’s goal is to reshape the economy to create a stable and sustainable market where Nigerian manufacturers can thrive. With this new kit, I can happily say NIMR is making great strides to achieve this vision,” Dr. Alausa remarked.
The HBV qPCR test kit, along with other products developed by NIMR, represents a major advancement in Nigeria’s healthcare capabilities.
The health minister expressed his eagerness to see the positive impacts of the new facility and pledged his commitment to ensuring the HBV qPCR kit receives NAFDAC certification and approval for widespread use.
“I’m eager to see the outputs of NIMR’s new facility and will work tirelessly to ensure their HBV qPCR kit is NAFDAC certified and approved for use, so it’s available to those in need,” he affirmed.
The commissioning of the Human Virology and Genomics facility marks a significant step forward in Nigeria’s public health landscape.
With enhanced research capabilities and innovative solutions, NIMR is well-positioned to address critical health challenges and contribute to the nation’s goal of becoming a leader in medical research and development.
