Eko Hot Blog reports that Dr. Tunji Alausa, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, has held discussions with Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
The duo met this week at the International Aids Conference (IAC) in Germany.
In a statement on Thursday, Dr. Alausa said their meeting focused on revitalizing Nigeria’s HIV/AIDS strategies, its efforts with the inauguration of the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) Acceleration Committee, and how UNAIDS can support increasing PMTCT and pediatric treatment.
The minister said both leaders also discussed enhancing UNAID’s collaboration with Nigeria’s health ministry on advocacy programmes.
“At the conference, my team and I met with Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS,” he said.
“Our discussions focused on revitalizing our HIV/AIDS strategies, Nigeria’s efforts with the inauguration of the PMTCT Acceleration Committee, and how UNAIDS can support increasing PMTCT and pediatric treatment.
“We also discussed UNAIDS’ plans, enhancing collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare on advocacy programmes, and our preparations for the upcoming AFRICAN UNION EXTRAORDINARY-SESSION OF THE ASSEMBLY on ending AIDS BY 2030: THE 2024 AU SUMMIT and the Global Alliance Summit meeting, which Nigeria will be hosting.
“I extend my thanks to the Executive Director and her team for the productive discussions and look forward to further conversations on implementation strategies.”
Earlier this month, Dr. Alausa outlined the Federal Government’s plan to address the country’s high rate of mother-to-child HIV transmission, which constitutes 25% of the global burden.
While launching the PMTCT and Paediatric Aids Acceleration Plan Committee on Thursday, July 11, 2024, the minister presented data revealing the low PMTCT and pediatric HIV coverage in Nigeria, which remains at about 35%, far below the 95% target.
“Our intention to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV is crucial to ensure an AIDS-free generation,” he stated.
