Once again, Oyo State has witnessed another fire outbreak involving two petrol tankers. The incident happened on Wednesday morning, April 16, 2025, around 9 a.m. along the busy Ibadan-Ile-Ife Expressway. It occurred specifically opposite the Current Foam factory in Ibadan.

According to reports, the fire started when a trailer tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, lost control while in motion. The tanker veered off the road, fell into a nearby ditch, and immediately burst into flames.

The fire spread quickly, and another petrol tanker, which was close by, also caught fire. The situation caused panic among road users and residents in the area, as thick black smoke filled the sky and explosions from the tankers were heard.

The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Thursday. He said the fire service received a report of the incident at exactly 9:29 a.m. Firefighters, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Adesina Olusoji, were quickly dispatched to the scene.

“When our team arrived at the location, both tankers were already on fire. We immediately swung into action and worked hard to control and put out the flames,” Akinyinka explained. “Thankfully, we were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings or causing further damage.”

He also appreciated the presence and support of security agencies, including the police and other emergency responders, who provided safety and helped control traffic during the firefighting operation.

No official report of casualties has been released as of the time of this report. However, authorities are urging tanker drivers to always drive carefully, especially when carrying flammable products, to avoid such dangerous incidents.

This is not the first time such an incident is happening in the state, raising concerns about road safety and emergency preparedness in the face of accidents involving fuel tankers.
