Two In Court For Allegedly Stealing Building Materials Worth N1.5m

Police on Monday arraigned two men, Wale Adeyemi and Stephen Udugu, at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing building materials valued at N1.5 million.

Adeyemi, 55, who is self-employed, and Udugu, 37, a driver, both residents of Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy, intent to commit felony and stealing.

According to the Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, the defendants committed the offences in November at Agege.

Ayorinde said that the defendants unlawfully entered into a construction site to steal the materials.

“The defendant entered the site at night and stole different sizes of aluminum windows and frames, a piece of big flush door,” he said.

He further alleged that the accused also stole three floor baths, nine water closets, 40 rolls of electric fence wire, aluminum roofing sheets, among other items.

“Neighbours close to the site caught the defendants when they were about to escape with the materials,” Ayorinde said.

He said that they were apprehended by residents of the area and subsequently handed over to the police.

The alleged offences, he said, contravened sections 287, 406, and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that section 287 of the code stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing, while section 406 attracts seven years for intent to commit felony.

he Magistrate, Mrs B.O Osunsanni, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Osunsanmi said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was later adjourned to February 19, 2020. (NAN)
