Two Killed as Gunmen Attack Military Checkpoint in Ebonyi

Published

Two individuals were killed during a recent attack on a military checkpoint along the Amangwu axis of the Amasiri-Owutu road in Edda Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.

An eyewitness recounted that the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, carried out by armed assailants on motorcycles.

According to Channels Television, the witness noted that a soldier and one of the attackers were killed in the ensuing gunfire, which instilled fear and concern among local residents, motorists, and travelers using the road.

As a result, commuters experienced significant delays, waiting for several hours until the situation stabilized.

Upon inquiry, the Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Police Command, DSP Joshua Ukandu, informed journalists that he had not yet received details regarding the incident from the Owutu Police Division at the time of filing this report.

Two days earlier, gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alongside the Eastern Security Network (ESN) launched a series of attacks across Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

Some parts of the state capital, such as Ikenegbu, Imo State University (IMSU) back gate, Wetheral Road, Amawusa, and the Toronto axis, recorded sporadic gunshots, sending residents into panic.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Imo State Police Command Spokesperson, Henry Okoye, made this known in a statement on Wednesday.

Okoye said the gunmen adopted a ‘guerrilla-style strategy’, where they emerge from their enclaves, unleash surprise attacks, and return to hiding.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has launched a head-on attack on the suspected gunmen and urged residents to report suspicious activities to the police.
