The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said that two Nigerian students held in a Bosnian immigration centre would return home soon.

She said that their return would be made possible by the diplomatic interventions from the Nigerian Mission in Hungary and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyema, who ordered a full investigation into the incident.

Abia Uchenna and Eboh Chinedu of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and three others had participated in an international table tennis competition in Croatia, but Uchenna and Chinedu were deported to Bosnia and held in a refugee camp since November 16.

Dabiri-Erewa who made this known in a statement on Friday said that the students planned to apply for asylum in Croatia before their ordeal, adding that while two returned to Nigeria after the championship, three stayed back and one applied for asylum.

She said: “Five students went for the table tennis event without the knowledge of the Nigerian Table Tennis Federation; two returned over two weeks ago, three of them stayed back while one already applied for asylum.

“Although, the Croatian authorities denied the allegations of maltreatment by the Croatian police, the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, has demanded a full investigation into the matter.”
