At least two powerful Northern leaders have agreed that the presidential ticket of the All Progresives Congress (APC) should go to the southern part of the country.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari was the first candidate of the APC. The party was formed in 2014 following a merger agreed upon by the Congress for Progressive Change, the Action Congress of Nigeria, a faction of the People’s Democratic Party and a faction of the All Progresives Grand Alliance.
Buhari is a Northerner and since power is being rotated based on the rather conventional zoning formula. Now two powerful northerners have express their view about the matter, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
The first one is Senator Ali Ndume. He talked in Abuja about few days ago. He talked on a wide range of issues including the 2023 presidential election. He said that southern Nigeria should have the APC ticket. He was explicit.
His argument is based on the ground that if the north had the ticket (again), it will amount to a third term which is unconstitutional. The 1999 Federal Republic of Nigeria constitution doesn’t allow a third term.
Ndume said that since Buhari is from the north, it will be wrong to let the north have the ticket again once Buhari completes his tenure in 2023. Hence, the ticket of the All Progresives Congress be zoned to the south.
As reported by the Nation Newspaper, the senator from Borno State said,
“I am against APC producing its presidential candidate from the north. The APC presidential candidate should come from the south.”
The second powerful stalwart is Katsina State Governor Aminu Masari. He talked yesterday about the issue and his argument is that the APC ticket should go to the south just as Senator Ali Ndume posited.
As reported by the Channels Television, Mr. Masari said fair is fair and that the APC ticket be zoned to the south.
He explained,
“With regards to zoning, fair is fair. If you ask me, I would, as a person — Aminu — think we should move the presidency to the southern part of the country”.
With the statement he made, it means he won’t join in the race for the APC ticket as he has agreed that the south should have the coveted ticket for the 2023 race.
