Rivers State Command made an arrest of two students of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, for alleged gang-raping a female student of the university.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni reported this while parading the suspects before the press in Port Harcourt, he said investigation into the rape allegation has started immediately as the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, has already instructed that the matter be taken to state criminal investigation department for a more thorough investigation.
Omoni said they discovered that a particular boys’ hostel in the University, known as hostel C was notorious for raping and assaulting women, during the commmand’s preliminary investigation.
He stated further that efforts were on to arrest the third suspect who ran away but was part of the rape-gang that raped the female student.
He added that the force would ensure he gets arrested and will make him face judgement.
However, the Centre For Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, which happen to be a human right group called on the Police to make sure the investigation of the incident is properly handled and any suspect found culpable should be made to face the law.
Mary Prince, who is the Acting Secretary of the Group spoke to press in Port Harcourt, criticized the act, applauded the vice chancellor of the University, Professor Ozo-Mecury Ndemele, for ensuring the arrest of the two suspects and handing them over to the Police.
