Two artisans were reportedly killed by a mob in Edo after being mistaken for armed robbers in Amagba community, Benin City.
According to sources speaking to NAN on Monday, the victims, identified as Osamudiamen Ehigie and Nosa Aghimie, were both welders. On November 16, around 6 pm, the pair were returning from a project site when they encountered gunmen who were in the process of robbing local residents.
A source revealed that the suspected robbers spotted the two artisans and chased them, leading the men to seek refuge in a nearby house. However, local residents, mistakenly believing they were part of the robbery gang, captured and beat them to death.
The owner of the project site, where the victims had been working, arrived shortly after and tried to clear their names, but it was too late.
In response to the incident, the police have arrested three individuals allegedly involved in the lynching. SP Moses Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the arrests, stating that two additional suspects are still on the run.
He added, “The command is aware of the unfortunate deaths of the two young men and acted swiftly to arrest three suspects, who have been charged in court, while two others remain at large.”
