A late strike from Shakirat Moshood secured a 1-0 victory for Nigeria’s Flamingos over hosts Dominican Republic in their final Group A match at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup on Wednesday.

The Flamingos will now face the United States in the quarter-finals on October 26, 2024. The U.S. finished second in Group B, having won two matches and lost one.

They were defeated 3-1 by Spain in their opener but rebounded with a 2-0 win over Colombia and a 5-0 thrashing of South Korea.

In their last encounter at the 2022 U-17 Women’s World Cup, Nigeria eliminated the U.S. 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

During Tuesday’s match, Nigeria thought they had an early lead when Moshood found the net in the 15th minute, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR offside ruling. Flamingos captain Taiwo Afolabi also tested the Dominican goalkeeper with a long-range effort in the 28th minute.
