Eko Hot Blog reports that U.S. first lady Jill Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 just days before President Joe Biden, who tested negative for the virus, is set to travel to a Group of 20 summit in India, as confirmed by the White House on Monday.
Biden’s 72-year-old wife, who experienced mild symptoms, had her last encounter with COVID in August of the previous year. The president, now 80, tested positive for the virus in July 2022.
Her communications director, Elizabeth Alexander, stated, “This evening, the First Lady tested positive for COVID-19. She will remain at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.”
On Monday evening, Biden returned alone from Delaware, as reported by Reuters.
Following the First Lady’s positive COVID-19 test, President Biden underwent a COVID test in the evening, which yielded a negative result. The White House announced, “The President will test at a regular cadence this week and monitor for symptoms.”
Regarding the potential impact on Biden’s foreign travel plans, the White House did not provide an immediate response.
However, Biden’s official schedule for the upcoming week, released shortly after the announcement of the first lady’s diagnosis, still includes plans for him to travel to New Delhi on Thursday to attend the G20 summit, followed by a scheduled flight to Hanoi on Sunday.
Biden is currently running for re-election in 2024, with his age being a prominent issue in the campaign. He is the oldest president seeking a second term, with some Republicans questioning his fitness for another four years in the White House, while Biden’s supporters maintain he is capable of serving as president.
