UCL: Leverkusen Held To 1-1 Draw By Brest In Champions League Thriller

Bayer Leverkusen played out an exciting 1-1 draw against Brest in the Champions League on Wednesday, with Germany’s rising star Florian Wirtz finding the net for the visitors.

Wirtz’s third goal in three Champions League games put Leverkusen ahead, but Brest’s Pierre Lees-Melou equalized with a powerful volley before halftime.

Both teams entered the match with perfect records in the group stage, and now sit third and fourth in the standings with seven points each, with Brest ahead due to more goals scored.

The 21-year-old Wirtz opened the scoring in the 24th minute, unleashing a precise 20-yard strike. He almost doubled Leverkusen’s lead five minutes later after weaving through three defenders, but his shot lacked power.

Brest responded six minutes before the break when a looping pass fell to Lees-Melou, who rifled home a volley into the bottom corner to level the game.

The second half saw both teams searching for a winner. Leverkusen’s appeals for a penalty after a potential handball were denied, and Brest’s Mahdi Camara forced a strong save from Matej Kovar with a half-volley.

Substitute Mama Balde missed a golden chance in the 87th minute, hitting the side netting from a tight angle. Leverkusen were further frustrated in injury time when VAR refused to award a penalty after Jonas Hofmann was brought down in the box.

Wirtz had a final opportunity to win it in the 95th minute but blazed his shot over the bar, leaving both teams to settle for a point in an evenly contested match.
