Atalanta now have four points from their first two Champions League matches this season, following a goalless draw against Arsenal in their opening game.
EDITOR’S PICKS
The match tilted decisively in Atalanta’s favor when former Charlton and Everton forward Lookman provided a precise curling cross in the 21st minute, which was headed home by Albania captain Berat Djimsiti.
Lookman, who had already struck the Shakhtar crossbar earlier, extended the Italians’ lead just before halftime with a composed finish into the bottom corner, set up by Sead Kolasinac.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s men sealed the victory three minutes after the break, with Raoul Bellanova nodding in Davide Zappacosta’s cross after poor defending from Shakhtar.
Shakhtar, playing their home fixtures at Schalke’s stadium due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, found it difficult to create chances and remain with just one point from two games.
