Ugandan Lecturer Jailed For Insulting President’s Mother’s Private Parts

A prominent Ugandan lecturer, Stella Nyanzi, has been sentenced to 18 months in jail over a poem dwelling on President Yoweri Museveni’s mother’s private part.

Nyanzi, who used the president’s mother’s genitals to criticise what she considers his “oppression, suppression and repression” in the country, was found guilty of cyber harassment over the viral Facebook post.

The academic sat for her sentencing via a video link from a maximum security prison by the shores of Lake Victoria in the country’s capital, Kampala, shouting vulgarities, flashed her breasts and gave a double middle finger on several occasions during the court session, according to Reuters.

The sentencing ignited outrage in the country, with rights activists further accusing the government of using laws about electronic communications to stifle political dissent.
