UI VC: Staff Unions Attack Varsity Senate Over Disciplinary Threat

Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of the University (NASU), University of Ibadan branch have expressed displeasure on the varsity’s Senate over for threatening to sanction them.

Information has it that the Senate of the University had called for the sanction of SANU and NASU on Wednesday, stating it was a penalty for disrupting the process of appointing the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

The Chairman of SSANU and JAC at the varsity, Wale Akinremi, on Thursday at a briefing on behalf of the unions, said they would not allow what he described as ‘political jobbers’ parading themselves as stakeholders to dictate the pace of things in the institution as done in the past.

He said, “We were not surprised that some few people gathered at the Senate chamber on Wednesday to shamelessly rant against our democratic right to stage protests.

“When has it become the responsibility of the Senate to sit on matters of union struggles in the university? In any case, the dramatics of Wednesday is not a true reflection of the respected Senate of our great university. It was a political meeting of Olayinka Peoples Party. Our senate can never be a meddlesome interloper, petty and infantile.”

Akinremi said the non-teaching members of staff, through the JAC, had written a letter to the VC and the pro-chancellor/chairman of the council, pointing out the fundamental flaws and biased disposition of the current VC.

He described the threat by the university’s Senate to punish the union members as a joke taken too far, adding that the Act establishing the university defined the lines of responsibility of the various arms in the most unambiguous terms.
