UK-Based Nigerian Man Calls Off Wedding Over N3.5M Bride Price List

A UK-based Nigerian man has reportedly ended his marriage plans after receiving an exorbitant and demanding traditional bride price list from his fiancée’s family.

The incident, shared by social media user Princess Adeola on her X handle, has sparked debates about cultural practices that may discourage genuine suitors.

The bride price list, intended to honor the bride’s family, included items such as drinks, livestock, clothing, and cash gifts for extended relatives, amounting to roughly N3.5 million.

Despite his deep commitment to the woman, including plans to take her abroad and fund her education, the man was devastated to find that she supported her family’s demands, which she justified by pointing to Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

Navigating the challenges of a long-distance relationship, the man had earlier sought advice from Princess Adeola on his plans to marry. However, he described the family’s demands as akin to “selling a child” and questioned how a marriage could begin under such financial strain.

Expressing his frustration, he noted that his willingness to invest in her future abroad should have been valued over monetary expectations.

“There’s this guy on my platform who met a lady here in Nigeria while he’s in the UK,” wrote Adeola. “Despite the challenges of a long-distance relationship, he was committed to her. He even sought my advice, and I encouraged him to go for it. But yesterday, he reached out to me, distraught, after receiving a bride price list from her family totaling N3.5 million.”

She continued, “His pain wasn’t just the list itself but the fact that the woman he loves supports her family’s demands, claiming everything is expensive in Nigeria. Why should anyone demand such an outrageous amount just for marriage? Doesn’t that set the tone for the man to treat her like he ‘bought’ her?”

Adeola added that the man, heartbroken, decided to end the relationship and block his fiancée. “He told me he’d cry, heal, and move on with his life. I feel bad for the lady—if only she had a more understanding family and stood up for herself. She’s about to lose a good man without even realizing it.”

The story has ignited conversations about balancing traditional practices with modern realities in relationships.
