UK Riot: British Envoy Assures Nigerians of Safety

In response to the recent unrest in several UK cities, British High Commissioner to Nigeria Richard Montgomery has reassured the Nigerian diaspora in the UK of their safety and security.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Abuja, Montgomery noted that the disorder had affected 12 towns.

However, Montgomery assured the Nigerian community in the UK that the government is taking all necessary measures to restore calm and normalcy in the affected areas.

He highlighted that the UK government has established 60 special “courts” comprising police and legal operatives to address the “criminal disorder.” Over 400 individuals have been arrested in connection with the unrest.

Montgomery expressed optimism that the situation would be resolved swiftly.

The High Commissioner emphasized that the United Kingdom is a diverse and inclusive country, welcoming people from different backgrounds to live, study, and work.

He also stressed that the UK will seek justice against those who incite hatred and spread disinformation online.

“We will not as a country accept discrimination or attacks against any community,” Montgomery stated.

Additionally, Montgomery mentioned that around 430,000 visa applications from Nigerians were successful this year and advised applicants to apply independently and be wary of agents.

NIDCOM’s head, Dabiri-Erewa, acknowledged that no Nigerians had been harmed in the unrest so far.

She emphasized that NiDCOM is in close contact with the Nigerian High Commission in London, as well as various diaspora and student groups, and none have reported any casualties.

She commended the UK Government for their prompt interventions and the arrests made.

Dabiri-Erewa reminded Nigerians of the travel advisory issued by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and advised those in the UK to stay vigilant and cautious of their surroundings.

The strategic meeting was also attended by British Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever, First Secretary Political Natalie Palmer, and several NiDCOM staff members.
