EKO HOT BLOG reports that Ukraine has leveled serious allegations against Russia, claiming that it exploded a major hydroelectric plant in the war-torn country, resulting in flooding and endangering the lives of civilians.
The incident took place at the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric plant, located in the Kherson region in eastern Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian officials, the explosions occurred on Tuesday morning, causing significant damage to the dam.
The Southern Operational Command of Ukraine stated,
“Russian occupation troops blew up the dam. The scale of destruction, speed, amount of water, and potential areas of flooding are currently being assessed.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took to Twitter, blaming “Russian terrorists” for the blasts and emphasizing the need to expel them from Ukrainian territory. He assured the public that all necessary services were mobilized and that he had convened the National Security and Defense Council to address the situation.
The operator of the hydroelectric plant, state-owned Ukrhydroenergo, confirmed in a statement that the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station had been completely destroyed and deemed irreparable due to the explosions in the machine hall.
Furthermore, the loss of water from the reservoir poses a new threat to Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is currently under Russian occupation. Concerns have been repeatedly raised about the potential for a major catastrophe if fighting were to occur near the power plant.
Ukrhydroenergo highlighted the importance of water from the Kakhovka reservoir for the power station’s turbines and safety systems. They noted that the Ukrainian staff at the nuclear power plant were closely monitoring all indicators and confirmed that the stationary cooler pond was currently filled.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) acknowledged the situation and stated that its experts at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant were closely monitoring the developments. The IAEA assured the public that there was no immediate nuclear safety risk at the plant.
The alleged explosion of the hydroelectric plant and the subsequent flooding represent a concerning escalation in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation, and further investigations are expected to determine the extent of the damage and assess the potential humanitarian and environmental consequences.
