Ukraine Takes Control 1,000Sq KM of Russian Land

Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, announced that Kyiv’s forces now control 1,000 square kilometres of Russian territory.

According to Syrskyi, Ukrainian forces have continued their offensive in Russia’s Kursk region, marking the seventh day of the operation.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that after Russia brought war to others, it is now facing the consequences on its own soil.

In contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin labelled the Ukrainian offensive as a “major provocation” and ordered his forces to drive the enemy out of Russian territory.

As the situation intensifies, the number of evacuations from the western Russian region has risen, with an additional 59,000 people being told to leave.

Alexei Smirnov, the acting governor of the Kursk region, reported to President Putin that Ukrainian forces had captured 28 villages, resulting in the deaths of 12 civilians. Smirnov described the situation as “difficult.”

EDITOR’S PICK:

The Ukrainian offensive, which began last Tuesday, has seen forces advance up to 30 kilometres (18 miles) into Russian territory. However, the claim that Ukraine now controls 1,000 square kilometres of Russian land has been met with scepticism.

The US-based Institute for the Study of War, a think tank, expressed doubts that all of this area is under Ukrainian control. Smirnov informed Putin that Ukrainian forces had advanced 12 kilometres into Russia and that the width of their push spanned 40 kilometres.

While the offensive has reportedly boosted morale among Ukrainian forces, military analysts warn of potential dangers. A senior British military source, speaking anonymously, cautioned that Moscow might respond to this incursion with increased attacks on Ukraine’s civilian population and infrastructure.

Speaking about the situation of things, President Putin suggested that the aim of the Ukrainian offensive was to sow discord and intimidate the Russian population. He emphasized that the primary objective of the Russian defence ministry was to expel Ukrainian forces from Russian territory.
